Is Odysseus a Hero? Essay -- Homer, Odyssey Essays

All through the epic, Odysseus is depicted by his companions and friends as a glorious man, an exceptional figure. Be that as it may, all through the excursions of The Odyssey, Odysseus’ genuine character appears. Legends are no special case to human instinct; all individuals will in general act contrastingly out in the open than in private. A generally acknowledged meaning of a saint is, â€Å"a man of recognized fortitude or capacity, respected for his bold deeds and honorable qualities.† Odysseus has not demonstrated the honorable attributes of a legend by acting fainthearted, uncouth, childish and insatiable in specific circumstances; such characteristics don't merit such a title. To be a saint, you should have a respectable and gutsy reason. As The Odyssey moves along, Odysseus is uncovered not to be a legend through his disgraceful demonstrations. Homer uses the character of Odysseus to delineate bogus profound quality which sabotages the idea of his chivalry. A primary motivation behind why Odysseus isn't a saint is on the grounds that he controlled reality and accomplished his triumphs through untruths. Achilles, the saint from the Iliad clarifies his considerations on the issue, â€Å"I detest that man like the very Gates of Death/who says a certain something yet shrouds another in his heart† (Knox, 37). Bernard Knox who composed the prologue to the Odyssey clarifies how Odysseus highly esteems his capacity to cover and control reality. Bernard likewise says, â€Å"He will readily utilize double dealing to win victory† (Knox, 38). A legend is a man of respect with an honorable reason and heart, however Odysseus has not one or the other. The primary qualities of a legend are that they can do gallant things, however hold their respectability. On the off chance that we penance reality for progress, at that point we are no better than the beasts that we battle. Lying and cheating to complete things isn't right and ordinarily has awful results. Another reaso... ...didn't battle with ethics. As Odysseus is murdering the admirers he clarified how he loathed the way that they had depleted his home and sought his significant other. â€Å"’You hounds! You never envisioned I’d come back from Troy - so cocksure that you drained my home to death, violated my serving-lady - charmed my better half despite my good faith while I was still alive!†Ã¢â‚¬â„¢ (Homer, 22.36-39). What is fascinating about this line is that the principal thing that he blamed the admirers for was spending his home. This line is additionally significant in light of the fact that the last wrongdoing he charged against them was the charming of his better half. This line demonstrates that Odysseus thinks more about his riches than even his family. No legend should think that much about close to home belongings. In view of the realities that Odysseus thinks increasingly about himself and that he has no ethical code I emphatically accept that he ought not be give n the title of legend.

Subsequent to winning the Presidential political race by probably the littlest edge ever, he got a 75% endorsement rating from the American open the next day, something the vast majority of todays lawmakers would kill for. The way that such a large amount of it is still recollected today means that exactly how incredible his words were. Individuals despite everything banter today who composed the vast majority of the discourse President Kennedy himself or his speech specialist Ted Sorensen so maybe we should simply consent to take a gander at it as a collaboration. I think there are 4 principle reasons its been so widely praised. 1. Straightforwardness Like Abraham Lincoln and Winston Churchill before him, JFK never utilized a $10 word when a 10 penny one would carry out the responsibility similarly too. He was an ace of straightforward, plain talking, which is clear in the event that we accept the penultimate passage as being normal for the discourse overall: â€Å"In the long history of the world, just a couple of ages have been allowed the job of shielding opportunity in its hour of greatest peril. I don't recoil from this obligation I invite it. I don't accept that any of us would trade places with some other individuals or some other age. Also, the shine from that fire can really light the world. Thus, my kindred Americans, ask not what your nation can accomplish for you; approach what you can accomplish for your nation. † This passage comprises of 111 words, however 102 of them comprise of just a couple of syllables. Also, of the 9 longer words history, ages, protecting most extreme, obligation, age, dedication, attempt and Americans none could be viewed as either remotely extravagant or bizarre in any way shape or form.. Its additionally at 1,355 words brief. Despite the fact that not the briefest of Inaugural Addresses, it was as yet shorter than most. He said to Sorenson, I dont need individuals to think Im a blabbermouth. 2. The Big Picture Unlike (state) President Obamas ongoing second Inaugural, JFKs Inaugural was pointed at the individuals of American as well as the individuals of the world. It was, all things considered, conveyed at the tallness of the Cold War (the Cuban Missile Crisis happened just 20 months after the fact). On the off chance that you read it in full you are promptly struck by how universal in character and all inclusive centered it is. Utilizing an explanatory gadget called anaphora, in progressive sections he guides his words To those old partners whose social and profound roots we share, To those new states whom we welcome to the positions of the free, To those individuals in the cottages and towns of a large portion of the globe To our sister republics south of our outskirt, To that world get together of sovereign expresses, the United Nations, Finally, to those countries who might make themselves our enemy 3. Utilization of Antithesis President Obama utilized Tricolon twenty two times in his first Inaugural Address. JFK utilized it twice. Rather, he made the greater part of his significant focuses utilizing Antithesis, the intentional juxtaposition of two contradicting thought in a similar sentence. He utilizes it multiple times in the absolute first sentence of the discourse and the most well known expressions of the whole discourse And along these lines, my kindred Americans, ask not what your nation can accomplish for you; approach what you can accomplish for your nation, however in fact a case of chiasmus, are a type of direct opposite. We watch today not a triumph of gathering but rather a festival of opportunity, representing an end just as a start, meaning reestablishment just as change not from the liberality of the state however from the hand of God United there is little we can't do in a large group of helpful endeavors. Isolated there is little we can do Let the two sides investigate what issues join us as opposed to dwelling on those issues which separate us I don't recoil from this obligation I invite it sk not what America will accomplish for you, yet what together we can accomplish for the opportunity of man 4. Similar sounding word usage Various investigations have demonstrated that similar sounding word usage (as in Peter Piper picked a peck of cured pepper ) makes verse a lot simpler to recall. JFK utilizes the gadget twenty one times. same grave promise man holds in his human hands for which our progenitors battled to companion and adversary the same whether it wishes us well or sick we will follow through on any cost, bear any weight the endurance and the achievement of freedom dependable companions pioneer control

Sophomore Year Summer Ideas TKG

Sophomore Year Summer Ideas Summer is a wonderful time of year. The snow (barring climate change) has melted. Movie theaters market films to kids and teens. Beaches are back open, and perhaps best of all, school is out. We hate to be the bearers of bad news, but unfortunately, if you want to get into a great school spending your time simply lounging and enjoying the bliss of summer isn’t going to cut it. Sorry (not sorry) but in order to be competitive, you’re going to have to be strategic and work hard during your summer vacation. To Take a Course or Not to Take a CourseYour goal should also be to do something interesting. A lot of people think that taking a course is a good use of their time. Sure, it can be hard work and it is certainly better than sitting around all summer, but the things is, taking a random course is not exactly…interesting to colleges. In fact, considering the fact that most summer college courses cost thousands of dollars, taking one can flag you as a rich kid, something that, on i ts own, is certainly not interesting to top universities. There is one exception to the rule: your goal with summer activities and all extra-curriculars should be to build a highly specific portfolio that demonstrates that you’re an expert in one niche area. Being the president of the environmental club, playing on the soccer team, and volunteering at an elderly home on the weekends will keep you busy, but filling your days with a random assortment of extra-curriculars won’t tell the colleges anything about why they should accept you. Showing that you’re an expert in electrical engineering, however, is a great path forward. It tells schools that you’re a specialist who knows what they want and how to get it. So, taking a highly-specialized course, like a class in microelectronics at a top tech school would be a great addition to a niche electrical engineering portfolio. Don’t Be a PageA lot of kids who come our way think they should try to secure a summer internship. They think the word internship engenders prestige. We find that, in actuality, internships can be tricky business. For one, if you’re interning for two days a week, the odds are, your employer is not going to trust you to do anything except make coffee. And no matter how much you try to spin it on your application, colleges will know you basically spent your summer being an unpaid messenger.  If you can find a place that offers a structured internship program for high schoolers (something that is very rare), that’s different and you should try and go for it. The goal is to learn and then demonstrate what you’ve learned after.  Get a Job! Before you apply to college, put yourself in the admissions counselor’s shoes. That’s tough to do when you don’t know anything about them, but you can probably assume a few critical points: they are an adult, they live in the same city as the college, and they’re not making millions of dollars. According to Glassdoor, the average salary for an admissions counselor is under $45,000. The goal is to connect with that mysterious person on the other side of the laptop. So, if you’re trying to connect with someone who needs to make more money, getting a summer job may be relatable. Taking a $10,000 trip to volunteer in Costa Rica may not be. If you do go the job direction, strive to ensure that your job is in the realm of one of your niches. There’s no reason a paid opportunity can’t fit right into the speciality you’re carving out.  Also, don’t be afraid to start your own business. Being enterprising a good thing.  Need help finding a prestigious summer activity? We help students connect to top notch research opportunities, apprenticeships, and more. Reach out to us here.
